Mental Health Awareness Week 13th -19 May 2024

Mental Health Awareness

Moving more for your mental health

Mental Health Awareness Week is an important initiative that encourages conversations about mental health and well-being. This year’s theme is all about movement and its importance in supporting our mental health.

How does Movement benefit Mental Health?

  • Improved Mood: Regular movement and exercise releases “feel-good” hormones, reducing feelings of stress and anger.

  • Reduced Anxiety: Physical activity helps lower anxiety levels.

  • Enhanced Memory and Concentration: Movement positively impacts cognitive function.

  • Increased Confidence: Being active contributes to improved self-esteem.

  • Better Sleep: Regular exercise can lead to better sleep quality.

  • Social Connectedness: Participating in group activities boosts mental well-being.

  • Prevention of Poor Mental Health: Movement is a proven route to prevent mental health problems.

  • Positive Actions: Whether you’re just starting out, have caring responsibilities, or work long hours, even short bursts of movement (as little as 15 minutes a day) can benefit mental health.

How can your workplace encourage movement and mental health awareness?

Workplaces can play a significant role in promoting mental health through movement. Here are some strategies that can be implemented:

  • Active Commuting: Encourage walking or cycling to work or getting off public transport early to walk the rest of the way.

  • Movement Breaks: Set reminders for employees to take regular breaks to stretch, walk, or do simple exercises.

  • Standing Desks: Invest in standing desks to reduce prolonged sitting.

  • Walking Meetings: Conduct meetings on the go, which can boost creativity and collaboration.

  • Exercise Equipment: Consider having exercise equipment like treadmills or stationary bikes available.

  • Team Sports: Organize regular team sports or movement-based after-work activities.

  • Office Challenges: Create fun challenges that encourage employees to move more, such as step count competitions.

  • Wellness Workshops: Offer workshops on the benefits of movement for mental health.

  • Mental Health Resources: Provide access to resources and support for mental health and well-being.

At Rico HR, we’re huge advocates of raising the awareness of mental health in the workplace, helping companies to increase productivity and job satisfaction. By implementing simple strategies and making small changes companies can start creating a happier and healthier work environment.
