Interviewing - Preparation is key!

Have you wondered why your recruitment is not as successful as you would like?

Interviews are the most used form of selection in business, however many find that it isn't the most reliable method. This is often because interviews take place without the right preparation. The interviewer talks too much, answers their own questions and doesn't have questions prepared.

So we have put together some Top Tips for Interviewers

1. Be prepared, read the CV thoroughly and prepare your questions.

2. Be on time – there is nothing worse for an interviewee than their interviewer turning up late for the interview. Gives the impression that you don’t see the interview as important.

3. Make them feel as ease, people perform better when they don’t feel stressed.

4. Give a clear structure of the interview, so they know what to expect.

5. Ask competency questions – asking for examples of when they have done not hypothetical what they would do. It’s a much better indicator of how they perform.

6. Be careful of bias and discrimination – sometimes we don’t realise it, but I still hear stories of women being asked about whether they plan to have children (shock face)

7. Try not to answer the questions for them if they are struggling, just allow for a bit of silence, its fine

8. Give them an opportunity to ask questions – be open about the role and company culture

9. Give a clear indication of the next steps and when they could expect feedback.

10. Make sure you always give structured feedback, it helps candidates to improve for their next interview.
